Indicators of Knowledge Creation and Ultimate Outcomes

The presence of research universities has been hypothesized to have a positive effect on the local economy. It has been difficult to prove this connection, however, due to the very large number of factors that affect economic performance.

  1. Academic research and development expenditures and the number of research universities.
  2. The number of research universities and the concentration of high-technology economic activity.
  3. The number of research universities and measures of prosperity (which are among the ultimate outcomes of economic development).
