Academic Research and Development by Metropolitan/Micropolitan Area

The presence of research universities has been hypothesized to have a positive effect on the knowledge-economy components of the local economy. A starting point for assessing this relationship is to gather data on the number of research universities and on academic research and development expenditures by metropolitan and micropolitan area.

The attached Excel dataset provides academic R&D data for 940 metropolitan and micropolitan areas in the United States for fiscal years 2000 through 2007. The academic R&D data come from the National Science Foundation. The file also includes the number of research universities in each of the three Carnegie Foundation categories defined in 2005: those with very high research activity, those with high research activity, and other doctoral/research universities. Counts of the number of research universities are provided both within each metro/micro area and outside each area but within 60 miles.
